Project description
Capturing expansive ocean views, Kanagawa embodies the spirit of contemporary coastal design. This three-storey family residence is expressed in off-form concrete, with an open-plan arrangement that balances solidity and openness. Low-height, suspended planters wrap each level, framing views to the east and west while softening the architectural edges of the concrete mass.
Vertical circulation is articulated through a suspended timber stair, rising through the house within a column of softly filtered natural light, creating both a functional and sculptural element that unifies the levels.
The first-floor living spaces are oriented to maximise ocean views while remaining strongly connected to the outdoors. This connection is reinforced through the integration of internal planters, a central fire pit, and expansive stacking glass doors that open directly to a suspended external pool. Acting as the heart of the home, the fire pit is positioned within a dramatic double-height volume, framed by the bedrooms above and crowned by an oculus that draws natural light deep into the centre of the house.
