Project description

Karijini House in Wembley Downs is a masterful residential sanctuary designed by Tenille Teakle of griTT Studio to evoke the raw, elemental beauty of Karijini National Park. Built by Louis Homes, the residence functions as a private oasis where architecture and landscape are inextricably linked. The structure is defined by seven-metre-high rammed concrete walls and narrow face bricks that replicate the distinct horizontal banding found in Pilbara iron formations. Internally, the floor plan mirrors the physical experience of navigating a gorge, utilizing dramatic level changes and varying ceiling heights to guide movement through the home. This "subterranean" theme is most evident in the underground basement, where light reflecting off a natural lap pool dances across the ceiling to create a serene, cave-like atmosphere. Every detail is curated to enhance this connection to nature, from the sunken 1970s-style lounge that fosters a sense of intimacy to the deliberate use of warm, low-level lighting designed to mimic the flickering glow of a campfire at night. By prioritising texture, light, and shadow over traditional suburban aesthetics, the home serves as a profound architectural tribute to the Western Australian wilderness.
