Project description
Drawing on the nostalgia of coastal living, the design references the familiar language of traditional beachside dwellings while offering a considered and contemporary reinterpretation of its context. At the heart of the plan is a multi-functional cruciform element that organises the architecture along north–south and east–west axes. This spatial cross, evocative of the Mount Martha boardwalk, establishes a deliberate experiential journey through both the house and its site.
The intersection of these axes forms an ‘in-between’ zone that operates simultaneously as an internal breezeway and an outdoor deck, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. This transitional space allows the dwelling to expand and contract in response to seasonal changes and evolving patterns of use, embodying a flexible and responsive model of modern coastal living.
A restrained material palette, anchored by the extensive use of timber, defines both the exterior cladding and interior surfaces, reinforcing a strong sense of material continuity and connection to the surrounding landscape. Beneath the elevated form, the undercroft is transformed into a secluded ‘secret garden’—a contemplative retreat that reclaims an often-overlooked space. This layered landscape creates opportunities for informal and spontaneous activity while deepening the dwelling’s relationship with its natural setting.
