Project description
Ridge Residence is a two-storey home designed for a couple relocating from Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The site sits along a ridgeline formed by historic lava flows from the extinct Wollumbin Volcano, running north–south and opening expansive, long-range coastal views to the east.
The primary living spaces and elevated pool are located on the upper level, where they sit among the treetops and enjoy sweeping outlooks down to the coastline below. The plan is organised around a boomerang-shaped form, allowing the longer service edge of the building to face the road and provide protection from the western sun, while the more public spaces fan outward into the landscape and views beyond.
Set within an open eucalypt forest, the site’s high bushfire risk informed the use of robust, fire-resistant materials throughout. Concrete blockwork anchors the building firmly into the terrain, giving it a sense of permanence while allowing for softer, organic forms. Standard block sizes, combined with curved wall blocks, enable smooth radii to each curved segment, with a charcoal finish that blends seamlessly with the surrounding weathered gums.
Above the solid base, an extensive aluminium screen floats at first-floor level. The screen rises to provide privacy and protection from the western sun, then sweeps open to frame panoramic coastal views to the east. Inside, a palette of natural stone, hardwood, and copper elements creates a warm, tactile interior. Native landscaping is used extensively to further integrate the house with the existing bushland setting.
